Over a decade ago, we embarked on a mission that would challenge traditional approaches to community development and prove that lasting change comes from within.

As there is a global shift from providing temporary humanitarian relief to sustaining communities, we want to be well-positioned to be a catalyst for change, empowering communities to develop ideas that will help them rely less on outside help.

Charity has helped. It keeps people alive, no doubt. And for the donors, it serves as an instant dose of altruism to feed their desire to help the poor. It provides temporary relief for beneficiaries from the claws of famine, sickness, and poverty. But let’s be clear, Charity can be a dependency. It can steal people’s self-worth. It can doom entire communities in a cycle of expecting the next free handout.

At STNI, we believe that people should have a strong, if not determinative, voice in their own development. Local knowledge, understanding, and decision-making in development must go beyond ticking a box; if we want an inclusive community, every effort should be made to hear everybody’s voice, not just the voices of the well-connected.

Through our programs in remote areas of Canada, Rwanda, Kenya, and Nigeria, we have seen local actors repeatedly set their own development agendas, develop and implement solutions, use their capacities, leadership, and resources to promote equitable change, and ensure that positive outcomes are sustainable.

Shalom To The Nations International (STNI) was incorporated in 2014 and obtained registered charity status in 2015.

In 2023, we obtained our trademark registration for the exclusive usage of ‘Shalom To The Nations ‘in Canada.
